Crochet Katerina – Appliqué

 

Size:

5.5 inches (14 cm)

 

Material:

  • Yarn calling for 5,5 mm hook in: white, green, blue and a small amount of pink and yellow.
  • A very small amount of pearl cotton in black and pink (for the eyebrows/glasses and the mouth)
  • Size 3.5 mm crochet hook (you can use a bigger or smaller hook to make a bigger or smaller appliqué).
  • 2 black safety eyes (7.5 mm)
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

 

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

 

What did I use?

Light worsted yarn.
I used « I love this cotton» Hobby Lobby.





Pattern: How to crochet a Katerina applique?


The body

The pattern starts by the shoes and legs that are made separately and joined together.

Right leg (left side):

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the green yarn.

  • Row 1: ch 5. (5)
  • Row 2: turn, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 3 st (place a marker in the first st); 3 sc in the last st; now working in the other side of the chain: 1 sc in the last 3 st.  (9)
  • 1 sl st in the next st (the st with the marker)
  • Row 3: make 1 sc in the same stitch where you did the sl st, 1 sc in the next 2 st.  (3)

Change for the white yarn

  • Row 4: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)
  • Rows 5 to 9: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)

Cut the yarn and keep the leg for later.


Left leg (right side of the body):

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the dark blue yarn.

  • Row 1: ch 5. (5)
  • Row 2: turn, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 3 st (place a marker in the first st); 3 sc in the last st; now working in the other side of the chain: 1 sc in the last 3 st.  (9)
  • 1 sl st in the next st (the st with the marker)
  • Row 3: ch1, turn: miss the sl st and then make 1 sc in the next 3 st.  (3)

Change for the white yarn

  • Row 4: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)
  • Rows 5 to 9: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)

We will now join both legs together:

  • Row 10: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 3 st; ch 1, 1 sc in the 3 st from the right leg. (7)
  • Row 11: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (7)

Change for the green yarn

  • Row 12: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 3 st. (8)

We are now working on the skirt:

  • Row 1 of the skirt: ch1, turn: working in BLO: 1 sc in all st. (8)
  • Row 2 of the skirt: ch1, turn: 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 6, 1 inc. (10)
  • Row 3 of the skirt: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (10)
  • Row 4 of the skirt: ch1, turn: 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 8, 1 inc. (12)

Change for the blue yarn

  • Row 5 of the skirt: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (12)

We are now back at working on the body:

Join with the blue yarn in the back loop only of the Row 1 of the skirt

  • Row 13: working in back loops only: 1 sc in all 8 st. (8)

Join with the green yarn:

  • Row 13: working in front loops only: 1 sc in all 8 st. (8)
  • Row 14: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 3 st. (7)
  • Rows 15: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (7)
  • Row 16: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next st. (5)
  • Row 17: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (5). Place a stitch marker in the first and last st of this row

Change for the white yarn:

  • Row 18: ch1, turn: 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 inc. (7)
  • Row 19: ch1, turn: 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 5 st, 1 inc. (9)
  • Row 20: ch1, turn: 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 7 st, 1 inc. (11)
  • Rows 21-22: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (11)
  • Row 23: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 7 st, 1 dec. (9)
  • Row 24: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (9)
  • Row 25: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 5 st, 1 dec. (7)
  • Row 26: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 dec. (5)
  • Row 27: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 dec. (3)

Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

The ears (make 2)

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the white yarn.

  • Row 1: ch 4. (4)
  • Row 2: working in the second ch from the hook: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc. (3)

Cut the yarn but keep a long tail for sewing. Sew the ears to the head.

Place the eyes between the rounds 22 and 23, spaced by 3 st. Do not attach them yet! Once you are happy with their position, take them off and with your tapestry needle and the black cotton yarn, make the eyelashes and the eyebrows. Attach the eyes.

With your tapestry needle and the pink yarn, make a nose.

With the pink pearl cotton, make the mouth.


The arms

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the blue yarn.

Right arm:

  • Row 1: Join with the purple yarn on the stitch marker that you place on the row 17 (the one on the left) and make 1 sc in the same st; 1 sc in the next 2 st. (3)

  • Row 2: ch1, turn: 1 inc in the next st, 1 dec. (3)

Change for the white yarn:

  • Row 3: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 inc in the next st. (3)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn: 1 inc in the next st, 1 dec. (3)
  • Row 5: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 inc in the next st. (3)
  • Row 6: ch1, turn: 1 inc in the next st, 1 dec. (3)
  • Row 7: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 inc in the next st. (3)
  • Row 8: ch1, turn: 1 inc in the next st, 1 dec. (3)
  • Row 9: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next st. (2)

Cut the yarn and yarn over.

The bow

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the greeen yarn.

  • Row 1: ch 6. (6)
  • Row 2: working in the second ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 5 st. (5)

Cut the yarn but keep a long tail for sewing. Sew the bow to the head.

With the yellow yarn and your tapestry needle, make the buttons on the dress and add some laces to the shoes.

A step-by-step crochet pattern to make an adorable Katerina Appliqué!

Materials

  • Yarn calling for 5,5 mm hook in: white, green, blue and a small amount of pink and yellow.

Change for the green yarn

Row 12: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 3 st. (8)

We are now working on the skirt:

Row 1 of the skirt: ch1, turn: working in BLO: 1 sc in all st. (8)

Row 2 of the skirt: ch1, turn: 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 6, 1 inc. (10)

Row 3 of the skirt: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (10)

Change for the blue yarn

Row 5 of the skirt: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (12)

We are now back at working on the body:

Join with the blue yarn in the back loop only of the Row 1 of the skirt

Row 13: working in back loops only: 1 sc in all 8 st. (8)

Join with the green yarn:

Row 13: working in front loops only: 1 sc in all 8 st. (8)

Row 14: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 3 st. (7)

Rows 15: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (7)

Row 16: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next st. (5)

Row 17: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (5). Place a stitch marker in the first and last st of this row

Change for the white yarn:

Row 18: ch1, turn: 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 inc. (7)

Row 19: ch1, turn: 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 5 st, 1 inc. (9)

Row 20: ch1, turn: 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 7 st, 1 inc. (11)

Rows 21-22: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (11)

Row 23: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 7 st, 1 dec. (9)

Row 24: ch1, turn: 1 sc in all st. (9)

Row 25: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 5 st, 1 dec. (7)

Row 26: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 dec. (5)

Row 27: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 dec. (3)

Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.
