Crochet Applique – Llama

Find here a free pattern to make this adorable llama appliqué.


Hello! Someone in my Facebook group asked me if I could make a llama applique, so here it is, an adorable little crochet llama. You can use them to personalize a crochet blanket, a crochet bag or even a crochet hat!  Don’t forget to join the facebook group,  you can ask your questions, share your finished projects and I regularly ask what pattern(s) you would like to see next. Crochet Llama Applique

 

Material:

  • Yarn calling for 5,5 mm hook in: cream, brown, white, pink and blue.
  • A very small amount of pearl cotton in black (for the mouth and the eyelashes)
  • Size 3.5 mm crochet hook.
  • 2 black safety eyes (6 mm) for the eyes
  • 1 black safety eye (4.5 mm) for the nose
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

What did I use?

Light worsted yarn.
I used « I love this cotton» from Hobby Lobby.


Pattern: How to crochet a llama applique?


The body and head

This project starts by the legs (make them separately and join them), then the body and the head.

Left leg:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the brown yarn

  • ch 4. (4)
  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 3 ch. (3)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)

Change for the cream yarn:

  • Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)
  • Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 inc in the next st, 1 sc in the next 2 st. (4)
  • Rows 6 to 9: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 4 st. (4)

Cut the yarn and make the second leg as explained below. 

 

Left leg:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the brown yarn

  • ch 4. (4)
  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 3 ch. (3)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)

Change for the cream yarn:

  • Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 3 st. (3)
  • Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc in the next st. (4)
  • Rows 6 to 9: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 4 st. (4)
  • Row 10: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 inc in the next st;

Keep working in the right leg: 1 inc in the next st, 1 sc in the next 3 st.

Both legs are now joined and you should have a total of 10 st for row 10.

  • Row 11: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 10 st. (10)
  • Row 12: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 10 st. (10)
  • Row 13: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 6 st, 1 dec. (8)
  • Row 14: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 8 st. (8)
  • Row 15: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 8 st. (8)
  • Row 16: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 3 st. (7)
  • Row 17: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 7 st. (7)
  • Row 18: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 dec. (5)
  • Row 19: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 5 st. (5)
  • Row 20: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 5 st. (5)
  • Row 21: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 5 st. (5)
  • Row 22: ch1, turn; 2 inc, 1 sc in the next st, 2 inc. (9)
  • Row 23: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the 7 next st, 1 inc. (11)
  • Row 24: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 11 st. (11)
  • Row 25: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 11 st. (11)
  • Row 26: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 11 st. (11)
  • Row 27: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the 7 next st, 1 dec. (9)
  • Row 29: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 9 st. (9)
  • Row 30: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the 5 next st, 1 dec. (7)
  • Row 31: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 7 st. (7)
  • Row 32: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 7 st. (7)
  • Row 33: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 7 st. (7)

Cut the yarn, leav a long tail for sewing.

 


The ears (make 2)

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the brown yarn

  • ch 4. (4)
  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next ch, 1 hdc, 1 dc. (3)

Cut the yarn, leave a long tail for sewing.


The muzzle

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the white yarn

  • ch 4. (4)
  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 2 ch, 2 sc in the last ch; now working on the other side of the ch: 1 sc in the next 2 ch. (6)
  • sl st in the next st

Cut the yarn, leave a long tail for sewing.

 


The face

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the brown yarn

  • ch 6. (6)
  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 5 ch. (5)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 5 st. (5)
  • Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 2 st. (6)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 6 st. (6)
  • Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 6 st. (6)
  • Row 6: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 6 st. (6)
  • Row 7: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 2 st. (5)
  • Row 8: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 5 st. (5)
  • do not turn, make 1 sc evenly all around (you do not want to crochet to tight for this part – you can also use a bigger size crochet). (approx. 18 st)

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail to sew the head on), fasten off  


The hair

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the cream yarn

  • ch 7. (7)
  • Round 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 5 ch, 2 sc in the last ch; now working on the other side of the chain: 2 sc in the next st, 1 slst, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 1 sc. (14)
  • Round 2: 2 sc in the next st, 1 slst, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st. (9)
  • sl st in the next st

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail to sew the head on), fasten off.


The belly

The belly is made in 3 parts: 1 cream one, I pink one and 1 blue one.

The blue part:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the blue yarn

  • ch 11. (11)
  • Round 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 9 ch, 2 sc in the last ch; now working on the other side of the chain: 2 sc in the next st, 1 slst, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 1 sc. (24)

Cut the yarn, leave a long tail for sewing.

 

The pink part:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the pink yarn

  • ch 11. (11)
  • Round 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 9 ch, 2 sc in the last ch; now working on the other side of the chain: 2 sc in the next st, 1 slst, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 1 sc. (24)

Cut the yarn, leave a long tail for sewing.

 

The cream part:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the pink yarn

  • ch 9. (9)
  • Round 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 7 ch, 2 sc in the last ch; now working on the other side of the chain: 2 sc in the next st, 1 slst, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sl st, 1 sc. (19)

Cut the yarn, leave a long tail for sewing.

 


Assembling all parts

Let the fun begin!

Assembling the belly

Sew the blue part to the body just above the legs. Then, sew the pink part, slightly over the blue part. And finally, sew the cream part, slightly over the pink part (see pictures below).

Assembling the head

Sew the muzzle to the brown part of the face. Add the nose (4.5 mm safety eyes) at the top of the muzzle. With your tapestry needle and the black cotton thread, make a mouth.

With the pink yarn and the tapestry needle, make a cheek on each side of the muzzle.

With your tapestry needle and the black cotton thread, make the eyelashes as shown in the pictures below. Place and fix the eyes (6 mm safety eyes).

Sew the ears at the top of the hair.

Sew the hair at the top of the face.

Sew the face on the head.
