Crochet Keychain: Watermelon

Find here a pattern for a crochet watermelon keychain.

 

Do you need a last minute crochet gift for Mother’s day or Teacher appreciation week?  Or do you just love watermelons? This crochet keychain works really quickly and is the perfect last-minute gift!

SIZE:

3.5” / 9 cm tall when made with the indicated yarn.

 

MATERIALS:

• 3 different yarns calling for 5,5 mm hook (and a very small amount of black and white pink for the facial features)
• Size 3.5 mm crochet hook
• 2 black safety eyes (6.5 mm)
• A small amount of white felt sheet or alternatively (2 bicolor safety eyes (6 or 7 mm/0.2 inches)
• Stitch markers
• A keyring
• Tapestry needle

What did I use?

Light worsted yarn in black, light pink, pink, white and green.
I used « Rico Creative Cotton »  in Rose (color 00), Fushia (color 13), white (color 80), Black (color 90), and Light Pistacchio (color 44).

 

How to crochet a watermelon?

Let’s start!

 

With the pink yarn and the 3.5 mm hook

 

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

 

Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring (6)

Round 2: inc 6 times (12)

Round 3: [sc in next st, inc in next st] x6 (18)

Round 4: [sc in next 2 st, inc in next st] x6 (24)

Round 5: [sc in next 3 st, inc in next st] x6 (30)

Round 6: [sc in next 4 st, inc in next st] x6 (36)

Round 7: [sc in next 5 st, inc in next st] x6 (42)

 

 

 

Change to white yarn.

Round 8: [sc in next 6 st, inc in next st] x6 (48)

 

 

Change to green yarn.

Round 9: [sc in next 7 st, inc in next st] x6 (54)

 

 

And the main work is done! We just now have to add the eyes, the facial features and to do a final sewing!

First, you need to decide where to place the eyes but do not attach them yet! Fold your circle in two to make things easier.  Then, with your tapestry needle and the black yarn, make two eyelashes for each eye (see pictures below for help). Then, place and attach the eyes.

 

 

Now make a mouth!

 

And with some light pink yarn, make the cheeks.

 

 

Now we will have to attach the keyring on the top left, fold the watermelon in two and sew it with green yarn to close it (see pictures below).
