Cow – Free Crochet Pattern

Start Here:

  • Please read the whole pattern properly before starting.
  • The pattern is written using US terms.

Parts:

  • 1 Body
  • 2 ears
  • 2 horns
  • 2 arms
  • 2 legs
  • 1 tail
  • 1 snout

Size:

  • Approx. 1.5 in (4 cm) using light worsted yarn
  • Approx. 2.5 in (7 cm) using plush yarn

Material:

  • Hooks: Worsted yarn: US C-2 / 2.75 mm crochet hook or Plush yarn: US 7 / 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn: White, black, pink, and cream yarn
  • 2 black safety eyes: 6 mm (worsted) or 9 mm (plush)
  • Stitch markers (if needed)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Polyfill Stuffing
  • Facultative: fabric/hot glue

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

How to crochet a Cow?


Body

  • Worked in continuous rounds.Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Stuff as you go.

With white yarn:

    • Round 1: 6 sc in a mr. (6)
      Plush yarn: ch 2, make 6 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. (6)
    • Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
    • Round 3: [1 inc in the next st, 1 sc]x6. (18)
    • Rounds 4-10: [1 sc in all st]. (18)
    • Round 11: [1 dec, 1 sc]x6. (12)

Insert safety eyes between Rounds 9 and 10, spaced by 2 stitches.

Stuff firmly.

  • Round 12: [6 dec]. (6)

Fasten off, close the opening, and weave in ends.


Snout

With pink yarn:

    • Row 1: ch 4. 
    • Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 3 sc. (3)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Thread the yarn through the first stitch to slightly close the snout.

Sew the snout centered below the eyes, over Round 8.

Tip: For very small pieces, you may sew only the outer edge and secure the rest with a small amount of fabric glue.


Ears (make 2)

With black yarn:

  • Row 1: ch 5. 
  • Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 sc. (4)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Sew the ears to the head over Round 10, spaced by about 8 stitches.


Horns (make 2)

With cream yarn:

  • Row 1: ch 4.
  • Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sl st in each chain. (3)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Sew the horns to the head over Round 11, spaced by about 4 stitches.


Tail

With white yarn:

  • Row 1: ch 7. 
  • Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sl st in each chain. (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Tail Hair

  • Using 2.75 mm hook: cut one strand of worsted white yarn, approx. 5.5 in (14 cm)
  • Using 4.5 mm hook: cut two strands of worsted white yarn, approx. 5.5 in (14 cm)

Fold the strand(s) in half. Insert into the first stitch of the tail, pull through by the loop, pass the ends through the loop, and tighten.

Separate the strands and trim to desired length.

Sew the tail to the back of the body between Rounds 3 and 4.


Arms (make 2) 

With white yarn:

  • Row 1: ch 5.
  • Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in each chain. (4)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Sew the arms to the body over Rounds 5 and 6, spaced by 3 stitches.

Tip: You may sew only the outer “shoulder” edge and secure the rest with a small amount of fabric glue.


Legs (make 2)

With black yarn:

  • Round 1: 5 sc in a mr. (5)
    Plush yarn: ch 2, make 5 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. (5)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
Thread the yarn through the first stitch to close the leg.

Sew the legs to the body over Rounds 2 and 3, spaced by 2 stitches, with the right side facing the body.


Black spots

With black yarn and a tapestry needle, embroider small spots at random places on the body.
