Free crochet pattern – Backpack

I’m so excited to share this tiny backpack amigurumi with you! This little project is quick, fun, and beginner-friendly, making it the perfect mini crochet idea when you’re looking for something fast and satisfying.

The tiny backpack works great as a keychain, bag charm, or small handmade gift — and it’s also a cute addition to my growing Back-to-School crochet collection.

Crochet Pattern – Free Crochet Pattern – Backpack

Start Here:

Please read the entire pattern carefully before beginning.

The pattern is written using US terms. The design can be created with yarn in various sizes. I made it with worsted yarn.

Size:

  • 2.5 inches (5.5 cm) tall with light worsted yarn

Material:

  • Yarn calling for a 5.5 mm hook in the color of your choice (I chose blue)
  • Embroidery thread in black for the mouths
  • Size 2.75 mm crochet hook (B/2). 
  • 2 black safety eyes (6 mm) 
  • Stitch markers (if needed)
  • Tapestry needle
  • poly-fill

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)
  • back loop only (blo)

Pattern: How to crochet a backpack?


Let’s start – Free Crochet Pattern – backpack

  • The backpack is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Don’t forget to stuff as you crochet.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and the color of your choice:

  • Round 1: ch 7. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 5 ch, 2 sc in the last ch. Now working on the other side of the chain: 1 sc in the next 5 ch. (12)
  • Round 2:  [1 sc, 1 inc] x6. (18)
  • Round 3: working in the back loop only: [1 sc in all st]. (18)
  • Rounds 4 to 12: [1 sc in all st]. (18)

Place the eyes between rounds 10 and 11, spaced by 2 stitches.

With your tapestry needle and the black embroidery thread, make a mouth between Rounds 8 and 9. 

  • Round 13: [1 sc, 1 dec] x6. (12)

Fill the backpack.

  • Round 14: [6 dec]. (6)

Using your tapestry needle, close the backpack by working through the front loops only of the 6 stitches. Pull the yarn tight to close the opening securely.

The front pocket:

  • The front pocket is worked in rows.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and the color of your choice:

  • Row 1: ch 5. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 4 ch. (4)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn, 4 sc. (4)
  • ch1 and make 1 sc evenly all around. Finish by 1 sl st.

Cut the yarn, but leave a long tail for sewing. 

Sew the front pocket to the front of the backpack over Rounds 5 to 7.

The side pockets (make 2):

  • The side pockets are worked in rows.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and the color of your choice:

  • Row 1: ch 5. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 4 ch. (4)
  • Rows 2: ch1, turn, 4 sc. (4)

Cut the yarn, but leave a long tail for sewing. 

Sew the side pockets to the sides of the backpack over Rounds 4 to 7.

The top handle:

  • The top handle is worked in rows.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and the color of your choice:

  • Row 1: make a chain of 8. (8)

Cut the yarn, but leave a long tail for sewing. 

Sew the handle to the top of the backpack.

The straps (make 2):

  • The straps are worked in rows.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and the color of your choice:

  • Row 1: ch 14. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 13 ch. (13)

Cut the yarn, but leave a long tail for sewing. 

Sew the straps to the back of the backpack. The bottom of the straps is between Rounds 3 and 4, spaced by 3 st and the top between Rounds 11 and 12, spaced by 2 stitches.
