Let’s start – Free Crochet Pattern – Bookworm

  • The bookworm is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and the green.

  • Round 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc, 1 inc] x6. (18)
  • Rounds 4 to 8: [1 sc in all st]. (18)
  • Round 9: [1 sc, 1 dec] x6. (12)

Place the eyes between Rounds 5 and 6, spaced by 3 st.

  • Round 10: [1 sc, 1 dec] x4. (8)
  • Rounds 11 to 20: [1 sc in all st]. (8)

Fill the head and the body up to Round 14.

  • Rounds 21 to 35: [1 sc in all st]. (8)

Fill the body slightly (you want to be able to fold it).

  • Round 36: [2 sc, 1 dec] x2. (6)

Cut the yarn, but leave a long tail (to be able to fold and sew the body). Close the body.

Now fold the body into the shape of your choice — I chose to fold mine like a “Z.” Once it’s positioned, thread your tapestry needle with green yarn and weave through all the loops of the body, going back and forth several times. Pull the yarn tight enough to secure the shape. When you’re happy with it, cut the yarn and fasten off.

With your tapestry needle and the black embroidery thread, make a mouth over round 8.

With your tapestry needle and the pink yarn, make two little cheeks over 1 stitch over round 7.

The glasses:

I made the glasses using black aluminum wire (16 gauge). You can follow the pictures below for guidance.

Cut a piece of wire about 12 inches (30 cm) long. Fold about 1.5 inches (3 cm) at one end to form the first temple. Wrap the wire around a pencil to create the first lens. Leave about 0.5 inch (1 cm) for the bridge, then wrap the wire around the pencil again to form the second lens. You should have about 1.5 inches (3 cm) of wire left for the second temple. Cut and adjust if needed.

Finally, fold the temples and insert them into the sides of the bookworm’s head. Adjust until the glasses sit nicely and make your bookworm look extra cute!
