Pattern: How to crochet a scarecrow?

Let’s start – Free Crochet Pattern – Scarecrow

  • The scarecrow is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Fill as you work.

We are starting at the top of the head.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and the light yellow.

  • Round 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
  • Round 2: [1 inc, 1 sc, 1 inc, 1 sc, 1 inc]. (8)
  • Round 3: [8 inc]. (16)

Change to the ivory:

  • Round 4: working in the back loop only: [1 sc in all st]. (16)
  • Rounds 5-8: [1 sc in all st]. (16)

We will continue working on the head later. For now, let’s make the hair. The hair will be crocheted into the front loops of Round 3. Leave 6 stitches of Round 3 unworked—these will mark the front of the head. Identify the center front of the head and where those 6 stitches are located. Join the light yellow yarn in the stitch just to the left of these 6 stitches.

Work the strands of hair as follows:

  • Ch 8. Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, work 7 sl st back down the chain.

  • (Sl st in the front loop of the next st from Round 3, ch 8, 7 sl st back down the chain). Repeat this step 8 more times to make a total of 10 strands of hair.

  • Sl st in the front loop of the next st of Round 3.

  • Cut the yarn and fasten off.

Place the eyes between Rounds 5 and 6, spaced by 3 stitches.

With your tapestry needle and the orange yarn, make a nose between the eyes, over rounds 6.

With your tapestry needle and the black embroidery thread, make a mouth over Round 7.

Keep working on the head.

  • Round 9: [8 dec]. (8)

Fill the head.

Change to the dark yellow yarn:

  • Round 10: [8 inc]. (16)
  • Rounds 11-13: [1 sc in all st]. (16)

Change to the blue yarn:

  • Round 14:  working in the back loop only: [1 sc in all st]. (16)
  • Rounds 15-16: [1 sc in all st]. (16)
  • Round 17:  [1 dec, 6 sc] x2. (14)

Fill the body.

  • Round 18: working in the back loop only: [7 dec]. (7)

Using your tapestry needle, weave through all the front loops of round 18, then pull tight to close the body. Cut and fasten off.

Join the dark brown yarn in any front loop of Round 17 (I joined mine at the back of the body to make it less visible). Working in the front loops only, crochet as follows: [3 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc, 3 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc] (18). Cut and fasten off.

Using the tapestry needle, stitch a small cross on the pants with orange yarn, and another small cross on the top with blue yarn.

The arms (make 2):

With a 2.75 mm crochet and the ivory.

  • Round 1: Start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
  • Round 2: [1 sc in all st]. (5)

Change to the dark yellow yarn:

  • Rounds 3 to 5: [1 sc in all st]. (5)

Cut the yarn but leave a long tail for sewing.

Sew the arms between Rounds 10 and 11, on each side of the body.

The hat:

With a 2.75 mm crochet and the light brown.

  • Round 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in all st]. (12)
  • Round 4: [1 inc, 1 sc] x6. (18)
  • Round 5: [1 sc in all st]. (18)
  • Round 6: [1 inc, 2 sc] x6. (24)

Change to the dark brown yarn:

  • Round 7: [1 hdc in all st]. (24)

Change to the light brown yarn:

  • Round 8: working in the front loops only: [1 inc, 3 sc] x6. (30)

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

With your tapestry needle and orange yarn, create a small patch as follows: cover 3 stitches between Rounds 5 and 6 (repeat once more). Next, cover 2 stitches between Rounds 6 and 7 (repeat once more). Finally, make a single stitch that runs diagonally from the top left to the bottom right of the orange patch. Cut the yarn and fasten off.
