Love Letter – Free Crochet Pattern

This pattern is made of:

  • Envelope
  • Heart

Finished Size

  • Approx. 2 x 1.5 inches (5×4 cm) using light worsted yarn

Materials

  • Envelope: 2.75 mm (US C-2) for worsted yarn
  • Heart: 2.25 mm (US B-1) crochet hook
  • Worsted yarn in white and a small amount of pink for the cheeks
  • Embroidery thread in pink for the heart
  • Cotton Thread in black for the mouth
  • 2 black safety eyes (5 mm)
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Polyfill stuffing
  • Optional: hot/fabric glue

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (HDC)
  • double crochet (DC)

How to crochet a Love Letter?


Envelope

  • The envelope is worked first in rounds around a foundation chain, then in rows to form the flap.
    Use a stitch marker if needed.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and white:

  • ch 13.
  • Round 1:
    Turn, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook:
    1 sc in the next 11 ch, 2 sc in the last ch.
    Working along the opposite side of the chain:
    1 sc in the next 11 ch. (24)
  • Round 2: [2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next 23 st]. (25)
  • Rounds 3-9: [1 sc in all st]. (25)

Flap:

Continue working in rows:

Before starting the flap, make sure your hook is positioned at one corner of the envelope opening. To adjust your position, work 1 additional sc if needed.

  • Row 10: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 12 st. (12)
  • Row 11: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 8 st, 1 dec. (10)
  • Row 12: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 6 st, 1 dec. (8)
  • Row 13: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 dec. (6)
  • Row 14: ch1, turn: 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 dec. (4)
  • Row 15: ch1, turn: 2 dec. (2)
  • Row 16: ch1, turn: 1 dec. (1)

Flip the flap down.

Face Details

  • Place the safety eyes between Rounds 5 and 6, spaced by 2 stitches, on each side of the pointed flap.
  • With pink yarn, embroider two small cheeks between Rounds 4 and 5, just below the eyes.
  • With black cotton thread, embroider a small mouth over Round 4.

Lightly stuff the envelope.

Sew the flap over the envelope and fasten off.


Heart

  • Worked into a chain.

With a 2.25 mm (US B-1) crochet hook and Embroidery thread in pink:

  • Round 1:
    ch 2; working in the 2nd ch from the hook:
    3 DC, 2 HDC, 1 DC (bottom tip), 2 HDC, 3 DC, ch 2;

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Insert the tail in the center of the heart (in the 2nd ch space)

Sew (or glue) the heart to the pointed flap of the envelope.
