Owl – Free Crochet Pattern

Start Here:

  • Please read the whole pattern properly before starting.
  • The pattern is written using US terms.

Parts:

  • 1 Body
  • 2 wings
  • 2 feet

Size:

  • Approx. 1.5 inches (4 cm) using light worsted yarn
  • Approx. 2.5 inches (7 cm) using plush yarn

Material:

  • Worsted yarn in light brown, white, and gold OR Plush yarn in light brown, white, and gold.
  • 2.75 mm (US C-2) crochet hook for worsted yarn OR 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook for plush yarn.
  • 2 black safety eyes: 6 mm for worsted yarn OR 10 mm for plush yarn.
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Polyfill stuffing
  • Optional: Hot/fabric glue

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • double crochet (DC)
  • Half double crochet (HDC)

How to crochet an Owl?


Body 

  • Worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Stuff as you go.

With light brown yarn:

    • Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6)
      Plush yarn: ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook
    • Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
    • Round 3: [1 inc in the next st, 1 sc]x6. (18)
    • Rounds 4-7: [1 sc in all st]. (18)
    • Rounds 8–10:
      • 5 sc in light brown
      • 7 sc in white
      • 6 sc in light brown
        (18)
        Tip: Carry unused yarn loosely behind your work.
    • Round 11: [1 dec, 1 sc] x6. (12)

Place safety eyes between Rounds 9 and 10, spaced by 2 stitches.

Using a tapestry needle and 2 strands of gold yarn, embroider a small nose between Rounds 8 and 9, over 1 stitch.

Stuff firmly.

  • Round 12: [6 dec]. (6)

Fasten off and close the opening.


Feet (make 2) 

With gold yarn:

  • Round 1: 5 sc in a magic ring (5)
    Plush yarn: ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread the yarn through the first stitch to close.

Sew feet between Rounds 2 and 3, spaced by 2 stitches.
(The right side of each foot should face the body.)
Tip: Hot/Fabric glue can help with such small pieces.


Wings (make 2)

With light brown yarn:

  • Row 1: ch 5. (5)
  • Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 HDC. (4)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Sew wings between Rounds 7 and 8, spaced by about 7 stitches.
