Pattern: How to crochet a Valentine’s Bear?

Body

  • Worked in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Stuff as you go.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and brown yarn:

  • Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 inc, 1 sc]x6. (18)
  • Rounds 4-10: [1 sc in all st]. (18)
  • Round 11: [1 dec, 1 sc] x6. (12)

Place the eyes between Rounds 9 and 10, spaced by 2 stitches.

Stuff firmly.

  • Round 12: [6 dec]. (6)

Fasten off and close the opening.

Muzzle

To make the muzzle, cut one large white circle (about 7/16″) and one small black circle (about 5/32″) from felt sheets. You can use a hollow punch set or scissors. Glue the small black circle (nose) onto the white circle (muzzle). With a needle and black cotton thread, stitch a small mouth under the nose. Glue the finished muzzle centered between the eyes, with the top of the muzzle sitting between Rounds 9 and 10.

Ears (make 2)

  • Worked in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker if needed.

With brown yarn.

  • Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the ears on top of the head, over Round 11, about 3 stitches away from the eyes.

Heart

  • Worked into a chain.

With a 2.25 mm (US B-1) crochet hook and Embroidery thread in pink:

  • Round 1:
ch 2; working in the 2nd ch from the hook:
    3 DC, 2 HDC, 1 DC (bottom tip), 2 HDC, 3 DC, ch 2;

Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Insert the tail in the center of the heart (in the 2nd ch space)

Sew the heart to the front of the body.

Arms (make 2)

  • Worked in rows.

With brown yarn:

  • Row 1: ch 5.
  • Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in each chain. (4)

Cut the yarn but leave a long tail for sewing. Sew the arms to the body over Rounds 5 and 6, spaced by 3 stitches, on each side of the heart. You want the bear to hold the heart.

Tip: For very small pieces, you can sew only the outer “shoulder” edge and secure the rest with a small amount of fabric glue.
