Who doesn’t love avocados? Well… definitely not me! I’m completely obsessed 🥑
I thought there should be more avocados around us, so I decided to design these cute crochet avocado appliques. They were way too fun to make just one, so of course I created a whole avocado family!

Size
- Large avocado: approx. 4 in / 10 cm tall
- Small avocado: approx. 3 in / 8 cm tall
Sizes are given using the indicated yarn and hook. You can use a smaller or larger hook to adjust the final size.
Materials
- Yarn calling for a 5.5 mm (US I-9) hook in three colors: dark green, light green, brown
- Small amounts of black yarn (mouth, eyebrows, eyelashes)
- Small amount of pink yarn (cheeks, optional)
- 3.5 mm crochet hook
- 4.5 mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- 6.5 mm black safety eyes
Yarn Used
Light worsted yarn in brown, light green, and dark green.
I used Rico Creative Cotton Aran in: Pistachio (41), Light Pistachio (44), Nougat (56)

- ch = chain
- mr = magic ring
- sc = single crochet
- inc = increase
- dec = invisible decrease

How to crochet an avocado applique?
PART 1: Small Crochet Avocado
Work in rounds unless otherwise stated. Do not turn. Use a stitch marker if needed.
With brown yarn and a 3.5 mm hook:
- Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
- Round 2: inc 6 times. (12)
- Round 3: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (18)
Change to light green:
- Round 4: [1 sc in next 2 st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (24).
- Round 5: [1 sc in next 3 st, 1 inc in next st] x6 (30). Place a st marker in the first stitch and the 20th stitch of the round.
Work in rows:
- Row 6: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in next 6 st, 1 dec. (8)
- Row 7: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all. (8)
- Row 8: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in next 4 st, 1 dec. (6)
- Row 9: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all. (6)
- Row 10: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in next 2 st, 1 dec. (4)
- Row 11: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all. (4).
Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of Row 11.
Border
Do not turn. Switch to a 4.5 mm hook.
- Make 6 sc evenly until the first stitch marker
- Make 1 sc in the stitch with the marker, then remove the marker
- Make 1 sc in the next 19 sts (ending in the second stitch marker)
- Remove the marker
- Make 6 sc evenly until the third marker
PART 2: Large Crochet Avocado
Work in rounds unless otherwise stated. Do not turn.
With brown yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.
- Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
- Round 2: inc 6 times. (12)

PART 3: Faces
Now it’s time to give your avocados personality!
Baby Avocado
- Place eyes between Rows 2 and 3, spaced by 2 stitches
- Embroider a small mouth just below Row 1
Male Avocado
- Place eyes between Rows 2 and 3, spaced by 2 stitches
- Embroider a mouth below Row 1
- Add eyebrows above the eyes with black yarn
Female Avocado
- Before inserting eyes, embroider two eyelashes per eye
- Place eyes between Rows 2 and 3, spaced by 2 stitches
- Embroider a mouth below Row 1
- Add two small pink cheeks under the eyes
