Crochet Pattern – Free Crochet Pattern Giraffe

Start Here:

Please read the entire pattern carefully before beginning.

The pattern is written using US terms. The design can be created with yarn in various sizes. I made it with worsted yarn and chunky yarn.

The head is relatively weighty in comparison to the body. To address this, I opted to place 1 or 2 decorative glass gems at the rear of the body. This addition adds more stability to the body, ensuring that the giraffe can stand upright without toppling forward onto its head. Note: This is not recommended for babies or young children. I also made the front legs one round longer than the back legs to help stabilize the body.

Size:

  • 5 inches (12 cm) tall with light worsted yarn
  • 8 inches (20 cm) tall with chunky yarn

Material:

  • Yarn calling for a 5.5 mm hook in yellow and brown
  • Size 2.75 mm crochet hook (B/2). You can use a larger crochet. It will work fine but your giraffe will be slightly bigger.
  • 2 black safety eyes (7.5 mm)
  • 1 decorative glass gem
  • Stitch markers (if needed)
  • Tapestry needle
  • poly-fill

Important Note: When crafting this giraffe using chunky yarn:

  • Yarn calling for a US L-11 / 8 mm hook in yellow and brown
  • A small amount of  yarn calling for a 5.5 mm hook in brown for the tail
  • Size US 7 / 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • 2 black safety eyes (12 mm)
  • Stitch markers (if needed)
  • Tapestry needle
  • poly-fill
  • 2 decorative glass gems
  • Please refer to the pattern instructions provided below. However, instead of making 6 sc in a magic circle, ch 2 and make 6 sc in the second ch from the hook. This minor modification is recommended, as forming a magic circle with fluffy yarn can pose challenges.

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

  • Round 1: Start by making a chain of 10. Then make 1 sl st in the first ch to make a ring. Place a stitch marker in the sl st.
  • Round 2: 1 sc all around. The last sc will be in the marked sl st. (10)
  • Rounds 3 to 7: 1 sc all around (10)

Working now on the other side of the ch: 1 sc in the next 8 ch, 1 inc in the next st (the stitch with the stitch marker). (32)

  • Round 13: [1 sc in the next 8 st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 10 st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 8 st, 1 inc in the last 2 st]. (32)
