Pattern: How to crochet a giraffe?
Let’s start – Giraffe – Free Crochet Pattern
The mouth – Giraffe – Free Crochet Pattern
- The mouth is worked in rows. Use a stitch marker if needed.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yarn in cream OR with a 4.5 mm and yarn in cream:
-
- Row 1: ch 4. (4)
- Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: [1 sc in the next 3 ch]. (3)
Cut the yarn but leave a long tail for sewing. Keep it for later.
The ears (make 2) – Giraffe – Free Crochet Pattern
- The ears are worked in rows. Use a stitch marker if needed.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yarn in yellow OR with a 4.5 mm and yarn in yellow:
- Row 1: ch 4. (4)
- Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: [1 sc, 1hdc, 1hdc]. (3)
Cut the yarn but leave a long tail for sewing. Keep them for later.
The body – Giraffe – Free Crochet Pattern
- The body is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
- Remember to stuff as you crochet.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yarn in yellow OR with a 4.5 mm and yarn in yellow:
-
- Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6) – NB: if you work with plush yarn: ch2; make 6 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook. (6)
- Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
- Round 3: [1 inc in the next st, 1 sc]x6. (18)
- Rounds 4-10: [1 sc in all st]. (18)
Place the eyes between Rounds 9 and 10, spaced by 2 st.
I suggest not attaching them yet. It would be easier to sew the mouth before attaching the back of the safety eyes.
Sew the mouth to the head, centered below the eyes. The top of the mouth should be between Rounds 8 and 9. The bottom of the mouth should be between Rounds 6 and 7.
Put the back of the safety eyes and keep working on the head.
- Round 11: [1 dec, 1 sc]x6. (12)
- Round 12: [6 dec]. (6)
Cut the yarn, close the body and fasten off.
Sew the ears to the head over between Round 10 and 11, about 3 stitches away from the eyes.
If you use worsted yarn:
Cut two circles of brow felt (3 mm / 1/8”) and stick them to the mouth to make the nostrils (I used a hollow punch set to cut the circles – it works great and is the easiest tool I found to cut felt). You can also make 2 little brown stitches.
If you use chunky yarn:
Cut two circles of brown felt (5 mm / 3/16”) and stick them to the mouth to make the nostrils (I used a hollow punch set to cut the circles – it works great and is the easiest tool I found to cut felt). You can also make two little brown stitches.
Alternatively, you can decide not to put any nostrils. See the pictures below.
The horns (make 2) – Giraffe – Free Crochet Pattern
- The horns are worked in rows. Use a stitch marker if needed.
- I recommend leaving a long tail on both ends, as these will be used to create the brown spots on the giraffe. This also helps secure the horns in place.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yarn in brown OR with a 4.5 mm and yarn in brown:
- Row 1: ch 3. (3)
- Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: [1 slst, 1 slst]. (2)
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Position the horns between rounds 12 and 13, spaced 1 stitch apart, but do not fasten off. Using a tapestry needle and the yarn tails, create brown spots on your giraffe. To make the spots, wrap the brown yarn back and forth over 2-3 stitches, covering them with 3 strands. Repeat this process in different areas of the giraffe’s body. Add more brown yarn if needed. Once finished, fasten off and hide the ends inside the body.
