Free Crochet Pattern: Christmas Tree Applique – PIN IT FOR LATER!

Crochet Christmas Tree Applique

 

Material:

  • Yarn calling for 5,5 mm hook in the colors of your choice.
  • A very small amount of pearl cotton in black (for the mouth and eyelashes)
  • A small amount of glitter thread if you want to make snowflakes
  • Size 3.5 mm crochet hook.
  • 2 black safety eyes (7.5 mm) for the eyes
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

What did I use?

Light worsted yarn.
I used « I love this cotton» from Hobby Lobby.





Pattern: How to crochet a Christmas Tree applique?


I have made 3 different trees showing different shapes for both the foliage and the trunk, and different ornaments. You can pick up your favorite ones and mix and match to make your perfect and unique Christmas tree!

The Tree

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the green yarn

  • ch 15. (15)
  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 14 ch. (14)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 10 st, 1 dec. (12)
  • Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 8 st, 1 dec. (10)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 6 st, 1 dec. (8)
  • Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 dec. (6)
  • Row 6: ch1, turn; 2 inc, 1 sc in the next 2 st, 2 inc. (10)
  • Row 7: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 8 st, 1 inc. (12)
  • Row 8: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 8 st, 1 dec. (10)
  • Row 9: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 6 st, 1 dec. (8)
  • Row 10: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 dec. (6)
  • Row 11: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 dec. (4)
  • Row 12: ch1, turn; 4 inc. (8)
  • Row 13: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 6 st, 1 inc. (10)
  • Row 14: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 6 st, 1 dec. (8)
  • Row 15: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 dec. (6)
  • Row 16: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 dec. (4)
  • Row 17: ch1, turn; 2 dec. (2)
  • Row 18: ch1, turn; 1 dec. (1)
  • Row 19: ch1, turn; 1 sc. (1)
  • do not turn, make 1 sc evenly all around (you do not want to crochet to tight for this part – you can also use a bigger size crochet) BUT you will need to make “1 sc, ch1, 1 sc” in the st of each corner in order to have a pointed shape (see picture below). At the end, make 1 sc in the st at the top of the tree  (by doing that all around, you will have approx. 70 st).

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

 

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the brown yarn to make the trunk.

  • Row 1: Holding your tree upside down, insert your crochet hook and join and make 1 sc with the brown yarn 5th st from the right side. Make 1 sc in the next 3 st. (you should have 5 st of green left unworking on the left side – the trunk should be in the middle). (4)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 4 st. (4)
  • Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 4 st. (4)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc. (6)
  • Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 inc. (8)

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

 


The Star

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the yellow yarn

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

  • Round 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
  • Round 2: [1 sl st in next st, ch 3, 1 dc in the same st] x5.

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing). With your tapestry needle, sew the star at the top of the tree.





The Face

Place the eyes between Row 3 and 4, spaced by 3 st. (if you want to make eyelashes, do not fix them yet and see the pattern of the white Christmas tree).

With your tapestry needle and a double strand of black thread, make 2 eyebrows between Rows 5 and 6, and a mouth over Row 3.

Take a small amount of pink yarn to make the cheeks.

 


The Snowflakes

With your tapestry needle and a single strand of glitter thread, make little stars all over the tree.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the green yarn

  • ch 15. (15)

  • Rows 9 to 10: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (8)
  • Row 11: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 dec. (6)
  • Rows 12 to 13: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (6)
  • Row 14: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 dec. (4)
  • Rows 15 to 16: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (4)
  • Row 17: ch1, turn; 2 dec. (2)
  • Rows 18: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (2)
  • Row 19: ch1, turn; 1 dec. (1)
  • Row 20: ch1, turn; 1 sc. (1)
  • do not turn, make 1 sc evenly all around (you do not want to crochet to tight for this part – you can also use a bigger size crochet) BUT you will need to make “1 sc, ch1, 1 sc” in the st of each corner in order to have a pointed shape (see picture below). At the end, make 1 sc in the st at the top of the tree  (by doing that all around, you will have approx. 56 st).

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

 

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the brown yarn to make the trunk.

The Star

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the yellow yarn

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

  • Round 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
  • Round 2: [1 sl st in next st, ch 3, 1 dc in the same st] x5.

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing). With your tapestry needle, sew the star at the top of the tree.


The Tinsel/Garland

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the white yarn

  • For the small one: ch 6.

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing). With your tapestry needle, sew the tinsel at the top of the tree (see picture).

  • For the long one: ch 12.

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing). With your tapestry needle, sew the tinsel at the top of the tree (see picture).


The Christmas ball ornaments (make 4)

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the color(s) of your choice

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

  • Round 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring. (4)
  • 1 sl st in the first st of the previous round.

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing). With your tapestry needle, sew the balls on the tree (see picture above).


The Face

Place the eyes between Row 9 and 10, spaced by 2 st. (if you want to make eyelashes, do not fix them yet and see the pattern of the white Christmas tree).

With your tapestry needle and a double strand of black thread, make a mouth over Row 7 & 8 (see picture above).

The Star

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

  • Round 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
  • Round 2: [1 sl st in next st, ch 3, 1 dc in the same st] x5.

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing). With your tapestry needle, sew the star at the top of the tree.


The Face

Place the eyes between Row 4 and 5, spaced by 3 st. (if you want to make eyelashes, do not fix them yet!). Take the eyes off and with your tapestry needle and a single strand of black thread, make the eyelashes like in the picture below. Place the eyes back and attach them.

With your tapestry needle and a double strand of black thread, make a mouth over Row 2 & 3 (see picture).

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the red yarn:

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

  • Round 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring. (4)
  • 1 sl st in the first st of the previous round.

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing). With your tapestry needle, sew the cheeks at each corner of the tree (see picture above).

  1. I would like to know how big these applique christmas tree ornaments are? I would love to make some and if I use a bigger crochet hook what size do your recommend?

    1. I am so sorry I somehow missed your message. I would say you can use a size up. I have not the appliqués with me right now but they are about 5 inches.
