Crochet Unicorn Baby Booties

Here is a free pattern for a pair of crochet unicorn baby booties


I just made these crochet unicorn baby booties for a baby shower. It works fast and makes an adorable crochet gift for the future mom. These crochet booties are in newborn size (0-3 months). I am still working on bigger sizes. I promise I will have bigger sizes someday!.

Crochet Newborn Baby Booties (0-3 months)


Material:

  • Yarn calling for 5,5 mm hook in two colors (color 1 for the nose/sole/upper booties; color 2 for the head/central part of the booties)
  • Pearl cotton thread in size 12 in black and gold (for the eyelashes and the horn)
  • Size 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Size 5 mm crochet hook
  • Size 2.25 mm crochet hook
  • 2 black safety eyes (7.5 mm)
  • a small amount of black yarn for the eyelashes
  • Poly-Fil Fiberfill stuffing
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

 

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

 

What did I use?

For the booties and the head: Light worsted yarn.
I used « I love this cotton» by hobby lobby in pastel print and ivory sparkle.

For the horn and the eyelashes: Pearl cotton thread in size 12.
I used «DMC Pearl Cotton Balls».


Pattern: How to crochet unicorn baby booties?


Head (Make 2) :

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

With the yarn in color 1 and the 3.5 mm hook

Round 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)

Round 2: inc 5 times. (10)

Round 3: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (15)

Rounds 4 to 5: 1 sc in all st. (10)

Change for the yarn in color 2:

Round 6: [1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 inc, 1 sc in the next st, 3 inc, 1 sc in the next st, 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 4 st]. (20)

Rounds 7 to 8: 1 sc in all. (20)

Round 9: [1 sc in the next st, 1 inc] x5. (25)

Rounds 10 to 11: 1 sc in all. (25)

Decide where to place the eyes (BUT do not fix them yet). I put mine between Rounds 8 and 9, spaced by 2 st. Once you know where to put them, take your tapestry needle and the black cotton pearl thread. As shown in the picture below, make some eyelashes. Then place the eyes back and fix them.

Round 12: [1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 dec] x5. (20)

Round 13: [1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 dec] x5. (15)

Stuff the head.

Round 14: [1 sc in the next st, 1 dec] x5. (10)

Round 15: [5 dec]. (5)

Close the head and fasten off.

 


The crochet horn (Make 2) :

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

With the cotton pearl thread in gold and the 2.25 mm hook

Round 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring. (4)

Round 2: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x2. (6)

Round 3: [1 sc in next 2 st, 1 inc in next st] x2. (8)

Round 4: [1 sc in all st]. (8)

Round 5: [1 sc in next 3 st, 1 inc in next st] x2. (10)

Round 6: [1 sc in all st]. (10)

leave a long tail for sewing and fasten off.


The ears (Make 4) :

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

With the yarn in color 2 and the 3.5 mm hook

ch 5. (5)

Turn; in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sl st, 1 sc in the next ch, 1 hdc, 1 dc. (4)

Cut the yarn, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Sew the horn and the ears to the head as shown in the picture below. Ears are placed between rounds 11 and 12. Horn is placed over rounds 10 and 11

Booties (make 2) :

With the yarn in color 1 and the 5 mm hook.

(The first pictures are from other booties, ignore the color)

Ch. 12. (12)

Row 1: TurnWorking from the 2nd chain from the hook: 1 sc in the next 10 st, 4 sc in the last st. Working on the other side of the chain: 1 sc in the next 10 st. (24)

Row 2: do not join. 2 HDC in the first 2 st, 1 sc in the next 7 st, 2 HDC in the next 6 st, 1 sc in the next 7 st, 2 HDC in the last 2 st. (34)

sc 1. (This will allow you to start your next row in the middle).

Row 3: do not join. 2 HDC in the first 2 st, 1 HDC in the next 12 st, 2 HDC in the next 6 st, 1 HDC in the next 12 st, 2 HDC in the last 2 st. (44)

Row 4: do not join. Working in the back loop only. 1 sc in all st. (44)

sc 1. (This will allow you to start your next row in the middle).

Measure the sole of the bootie. It should be around 9-10 cm for a newborn size. Adjust the size of your crochet if it is not the case. 

Change your yarn and keep working with color 2:

Row 5: do not join. 1 sc in all st. (44)

Row 6: do not join. 1 sc in the next 16 sc, 6 dec, 1 sc in the next 16 sc. (38)

Row 7: do not join. 1 sc in all. (38)

Row 8: do not join. 1 sc in the next 14 sc, 5 dec,1 sc in the next 14 sc. (33)

Row 9: do not join. 1 sc in all st. (33)

Row 10: do not join. 1 sc in the next 12 sc, 4 dec,1 sc in the next 13 sc. (29)

Row 11: do not join. 1 sc in the next 11 sc, 3 dec,1 sc in the next 12 sc. (26)

Change your yarn and keep working with color 1:

Row 12: do not join. 1 sc in the next 12 sc, 1 dec,1 sc in the next 12 sc. (25)

Row 13: do not join. 1 DC in all st. (25)

Change your yarn and keep working with color 2:

Row 14: do not join. 1 sc in all st. (25)

sl st in the next st, cut the yarn and fasten off.

 

 


The hair :

It is now time to make the hair. It offers so many different possibilities. You can play with different hairstyles, different lengths,…

First, you have to cut several lengths of yarn (color 1) of about 8 inches long. Insert your 3 mm crochet hook under a stitch of the head and grab the middle of 1 stand, bringing it through the body. Now with your hands, wrap both ends of the strand and pull them through the loop. Repeat the same work for several lengths at a different place each time. Then with your tapestry needle, you can separate the different strands of the yarn. Cut the yarn to a length of your choice. Do the exact same work at the back of the booties.

Sew the heads to the bodies.
