Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

Start Here:

Please read the whole pattern properly before starting.

The pattern is written using US terms.

This pattern is made of the following parts:

  • 1 Body
  • 2 ears
  • 4 legs
  • 1 tail

Material:

  • 1 yarn calling for 5,5 mm hook in light grey
  • Size 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • 2 black safety eyes (6 mm)
  • Poly-Fil Fiberfill stuffing
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)


Pattern: How to crochet an Elephant?


Let’s start – Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

 

The head – Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

  • The head is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Remember to stuff as you crochet.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the light grey yarn.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: inc 6 times. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (18)
  • Round 4: [1 sc in next 2 st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (24)
  • Round 5: 1 sc in all st. (24)
  • Round 6: [1 sc in next 3 st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (30)
  • Rounds 7 to 14: 1 sc in all st. (30)

Place the eyes between the Rounds 7 and 8, spaces by 3 st.

  • Round 15: [1 sc in next 3 st, 1 dec in next st] x6. (24)
  • Round 16: [1 sc in next 2 st, 1 dec] x6. (18)
  • Round 17: [1 sc in next st, 1 dec] x6. (12)

Fill the head with poly-fil.

  • Round 18: [6 dec]. (6)

Yarn over, close the head and leave a long tail for sewing. Keep it for later.


The body – Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

  • The body is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Remember to stuff as you crochet.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the light grey yarn.

We start by the bottom of the body and will finish by the top.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: inc 6 times. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (18)
  • Round 4: [1 sc in next 2 st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (24)
  • Round 5: 1 sc in all st. (24)
  • Round 6: [1 sc in next 3 st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (30)
  • Rounds 7 to 15: 1 sc in all st. (30)
  • Round 16: [1 sc in next 3 st, 1 dec in next st] x6. (24)
  • Round 17: 1 sc in all st. (24)
  • Round 18: [1 sc in next 2 st, 1 dec] x6. (18)
  • Round 19: [1 sc in next st, 1 dec] x6. (12)

Fill the head with poly-fil.

  • Round 20: [6 dec]. (6)

Yarn over, close the body and leave a long tail for sewing.


The legs (make 4) – Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

  • The legs are worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Remember to stuff as you crochet.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the light grey yarn.

  • Round 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
  • Round 2: inc 5 times. (10)
  • Round 3: work in back loop only (blo): [1 sc in all st]. (10)
  • Rounds 4 to 10: [1 sc in all st]. (10)
  • Round 11: [1 sc in the next 5 st]. (5)
  • Round 12: ch1, turn: [1 sc in the next 5 st]. (5)
  • Round 13: ch1, turn: [1 dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 dec]. (3)

Yarn over and leave a long tail for sewing.

Sew the back legs between Rounds 4 and 5 of the body, the front legs between Rounds 12 and 13 and the head at the top.


The trunk – Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

  • The trunk is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Remember to stuff as you crochet.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the light grey yarn.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: work in back loop only (blo): [1 sc in all st]. (6)
  • Rounds 3 to 4: [1 sc in all st]. (6)
  • Round 5: [1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc] x2. (8)
  • Round 6: [1 dc in the next 4 st, 1 sc in the next 4 st]. (8)
  • Rounds 7 to 8: [1 sc in all st]. (8)
  • Round 9: [1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 dc in the next 4 st]. (8)
  • Round 10: [1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 inc] x2. (10)
  • Round 11: [1 sc in all st]. (10)

Yarn over and leave a long tail for sewing. Sew the trunk below the eyes.

Attach the head to the body (see picture below).


The ears – Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

  • The ears are worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral) at first and then in rows. Use a stitch marker if needed.

– The right ear – Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the light grey yarn.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn: [2 sc in the next 4 st, 2 dc in the next st, 1 dc in the next st]. (11)
  • Row 3: ch1, turn: [1 dc in the next st; (1 hdc and 1 sc in the next st); (1 sc in the next st, 1 inc) x4, 1 sc in the last st]. (16)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn: [(1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc) x4;  2 hdc in the next st; 1 dc in the next 3 st]. (21)
  • Row 5: [make 6 sc evenly spaced (see picture), 1 sl st in the first st or Row 4].

– The left ear – Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the light grey yarn.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn: [1 dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st, (2 sc in the next st) x4]. (11)
  • Row 3: ch1, turn: [1 sc in the next st, (1 sc in the next st, 1 inc) x4, (1 sc and 1 hdc in the next st), 1 dc in the next st]. (16)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn: [1 dc in the next 3 st, 2 hdc in the next st, (1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc) x4]. (21)
  • Row 5: [make 6 sc evenly spaced (see picture), 1 sl st in the first st or Row 4].

Sew the ears to the head as shown in the picture below.


The tail – Elephant Free Crochet Pattern

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the light grey yarn.

  • Row 1: ch 11. (11)
  • Row 2: starting in the second ch from the hook: 1 sc in each ch. (10)

Cut 2 lengths of yarn of about 6 inches (15 cm). Insert your crochet hook under a stitch at the end of the tail and grab the middle of both stands, bringing them through the tail. Now with your hands, wrap both ends of the strand and pull them through the loop. Cut the yarn to a length of your choice. With your tapestry needle, separate the strands of the yarn.
