This crochet horse applique is so much fun to do! They can be great to decorate a crochet blanket, a bag or a jumper!

SIZE :
4.5” / 12 cm tall when made with the indicated yarn. You can use a smaller hook to get a smaller applique.
MATERIALS:
• 1 type of yarn calling for 5,5 mm (US I-9) hook in 2 different colors
• Size 3 mm crochet hook
• Size 3.5 mm crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
• 6.5 mm black safety eyes
What did I use?
Light worsted yarn in dark brown and light brown
I used «I love this cotton! Yarn» from Hobby Lobby in Brown (color 20) and Antique Cream (color 85).

How to crochet a horse applique?
Let’s start the crochet horse applique!
PART 1: The head
With a 3.5 mm crochet.
use the dark brown yarn.
Row 1: ch 5. (5)
Row 2: turn; sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3. (4)
Row 3: ch1, turn; Work 2 sc in 1st st, sc in each of the next 2 st, work 2 sc in last st. (6)
Row 4: ch1, turn; sc in all. (6)
Row 5: ch1, turn; sc in all. (6)
Row 6: ch1, turn; Work 2 sc in 1st st, sc in each of the next 4 st, Work 2 sc in last st.(8)
Row 7: ch1, turn; sc in all. (8)
Row 8: ch1, turn; sc in all. (8)
Row 9: ch1, turn; dec, sc in each of the next 4 st, dec. (6)
Row 10: ch1, turn; sc in all. (6)
Row 11: ch1, turn; sc in all. (6)
Row 12: ch1, turn; (1 sc (place stitch marker), 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) in first st, sc in each of the next 4 st, (1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc) in last st. (14)
DO NOT TURN and sc all around and stop before the first st of the previous row (with the stitch marker) (20)
Row 13: starting in the st with the stitch marker: sc in the next 2, (1 sc, 1 dc) in next stitch, ch 2, (1 dc, 1 sc) in next st, sl st in next 6 st, (1 sc, 1 dc) in next st, ch 2, (1 dc, 1 sc) in next st, sc in the next 2 (22)
sl st in next st, cut your yarn and sew in the end
PART 2: The nose
With a 3.5 mm crochet.
use the light brown yarn.
Row 1: ch 5. (5)
Row 2: turn; sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3. (4)
Row 3: ch1, turn; Work 2 sc in 1st st, sc in each of the next 2 st, work 2 sc in last st. (6)
Row 4: ch1, turn; sc in all. (6)
Row 5: ch1, turn; sc in all. (6)
DO NOT TURN and sc all around (10), sl st in first st from row 5, leave a long tail, cut your yarn and attach the nose to the head
PART 3: The body
With a 3.5 mm crochet.
use the dark brown yarn.
Row 1: ch 6. (6)
Row 2: turn; 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next 4. (5)
Row 3: ch1, turn; Work 2 sc in 1st st, sc in each of the next 3 st, work 2 sc in last st. (7)
Row 4: ch1, turn; Work 2 sc in 1st st, sc in each of the next 5 st, Work 2 sc in last st.(9)
Rows 5 to 15: ch1, turn; sc in all. (9)
Row 16: ch1, turn; dec, sc in each of the next 5 st, dec. (7)
Row 17: ch1, turn; dec (place stitch marker), sc in each of the next 3 st, dec. (5)
DO NOT TURN and sc evenly all around (34), sl st in first st from row 17 (with stitch marker), leave a long tail, cut your yarn. Attach the head to the body. The bottom of the body is the flat side (see picture below). You can choose if you want to head in the middle or slightly inclined.
PART 4: The legs (make 4)
With a 3.5 mm crochet.
start with the light brown yarn.
Please note that I did not chain 1 before to turn in order to make the side of the legs more regular.
Row 1: ch 4. (4)
Row 2: turn; sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2. (3)
Row 3: turn; sc in all. (3)
Change color: use the dark brown yarn
Rows 4 to 8: turn; sc in all. (3)
Cut the yarn, leave a long tail to sew to the body. Sew 2 legs to the front of the body as shown in the picture and 2 on the back, on each side of the body.
PART 6: The eyes
I used 7.5 mm safety eyes. I placed them in the center of the head (about 2 rows above the nose) and I left 2 stitches between both eyes
PART 7: The hair
With a 3 mm crochet.
Use with the light brown yarn.
For the head:
Make 4 ch of 14 for the longest hair. Leave a long tail for sewing to the head.
Make 2 ch of 7 for the fringe. Leave a long tail for sewing to the head.
I attached each chain to the top of the head as follow from left to right: ch of 14, ch of 14, ch of 7, ch of 7, ch of 14, ch of 14.
For the tail:
Make 4 ch of 17.
Attach the 4 ch on the left side of the body.

Thank you for the free pattern. I have a question. When you start the body of the unicorn, it says chain 6, sc in second chain from hook, then sc in next 5. There’s only 6 chains so what do I do? Add another chain to be able to do the 5 sc or only do 4 sc? Thank you for your help.
