Start Here:

Please read the whole pattern properly before starting.

The pattern is written using US terms.

This amigurumi is made of the following parts:

  • Body and head (1 part)
  • 2 arms
  • 1 Shell
  • 1 belly patch
  • Facultative: 1 heart

Size:

  • 4 inches (10 cm)

Material:

  • Yarn calling for 5.5 mm hook in green, brown, cream and a secondary color if you want to make a heart. You will also need a very small amount of light pink for the cheeks.
  • Size 3.5 mm crochet hook.
  • 2 black safety eyes (7.5 mm)
  • Cotton thread in white (for under the eyes).
  • Stitch markers (if needed)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Polyfill

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)

Pattern: How to crochet a Mini Tortoise?


The legs – Crochet Pattern Mini Tortoise.

  • The legs are worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
  • Remember to stuff the legs as you crochet.

– Leg 1:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and green yarn.

    • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
    • Round 2: [2 sc, 1 inc] x2. (8)
    • Round 3: working in the back loop only: [1 sc in all st]. (8)
    • Rounds 4-6: [1 sc in all st]. (8)

Cut the yarn and fasten off. Keep Leg 1 for later.

– Leg 2:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and green yarn.

    • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
    • Round 2: [2 sc, 1 inc] x2. (8)
    • Rounds 3-6: [1 sc in all st]. (8)

Fill the leg. Do not cut the yarn. In the next round, we will join both legs and keep working on the body and the head.

In the next round, we will join both legs:

    • Rounds 7-14: [1 sc in all st]. (20)
    • Round 15: [8 sc, 1 dec] x2. (18)
    • Round 16: [1 sc, 1 dec] x6. (12)
    • Round 17: [1 sc in all st]. (12)
    • Round 18: [1 sc, 1 inc] x6. (18)
    • Round 19: [2 sc, 1 inc] x6. (24)
    • Rounds 20-24: [1 sc in all st]. (24)
    • Round 25: [2 sc, 1 dec] x6. (18)

Leave the head unfinished (do not cut the yarn). 

We are now going to do the face features.

Add and fix the safety eyes between Rounds 23 and 24, spaced by 3 stitches.

With the tapestry needle and some black cotton thread, make:

  • a little mouth over Round 21 (I used a double strand, twice),

With the white thread, make:

  • a little stitch under the eyes

With the green yarn, make:

  • a little stitch above the eyes (see pictures below)

With the pink  yarn, make:

  • 2 little stitches for the cheeks between Rounds 21 and 22.

Keep working on the head:

  • Round 26: [1 sc, 1 dec] x6. (12)
  • Round 27: [1 sc, 1 dec] x4. (8)
  • Round 28: Working in front loops only: close the head with your tapestry needle.

Cut the yarn and fasten off.


The belly patch – Crochet Pattern Mini Tortoise.

  • The belly patch is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and cream yarn.

    • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
    • Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
    • Round 3: [1 sc, 1 inc] x6. (18)

Cut the yarn but leave a long tail for sewing.

Sew the belly patch over the belly.

The arms (make 2) – Crochet Pattern Mini Tortoise.

  • The arms are worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and green yarn.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [1 inc, 2 sc] x2. (8)
  • Rounds 3-9: [1 sc in all st]. (8)

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing).

Close the arms.

With your tapestry needle, sew the arms to the body. I attached mine between Rounds 15 and 16 (with about 8 stitches apart from the front).

The shell – Crochet Pattern Mini Tortoise.

  • The shell is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and brown yarn.

    • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
    • Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
    • Round 3: [1 sc, 1 inc] x6. (18)
    • Rounds 4-5: [1 sc in all st]. (18)
    • Round 6: working in front loop only: [2 sc, 1 inc] x6. (24)

Cut the yarn but leave a long tail for sewing.

Sew the shell to the back of the body.

Facultative: The heart – Crochet Pattern Mini Tortoise.

  • The heart is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the color of your choice.

Part A:

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in all st]. (12)

Cut the yarn and fasten off. Keep part A for later.

Part B:

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [6 inc]. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in all st]. (12)
  • Round 4: We will now join both part. Keep working in part B and make 1 sc in the next 2 st; join Part A by making 1 sc in the next 12 st; work again in part B and make 1 sc in the next 10 st. (24)
  • Round 5: [2 sc, 1 dec]. (18)
  • Round 6: [1 sc in all st]. (18)
  • Round 7: [1 sc, 1 dec]. (12)
  • Round 8: [1 sc in all st]. (12)
  • Round 9: [1 sc, 1 dec]. (8)

Close the heart and fasten off.

Sew the heart in the arms of the tortoise.
