Hi everyone! I made these cute little crochet monsters as favors for my son’s birthday rainbow party. They worked really quickly and made an adorable crochet favors for all his friends. You can change the colors and make so many different monsters.

Crochet Rainbow Monster

 

Material:

  • For the monster: yarn calling for 6,5 mm (K) hook in 2 or more colors of your choice
  • For the eyes: yarn calling for 5,5 mm (I) hook in white
  • Size 6 mm (J) crochet hook, size 3.5 mm (E) hook
  • A small amount of black yarn for the mouth (yarn calling for 5,5 mm hook)
  • 2 black safety eyes (7.5 mm) for the monsters with 2 eyes and 1 black safety eyes (9 mm) for the monsters with 1 eye only
  • Poly-Fil Fiberfill stuffing
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

What did I use?

For the monster: Bulky yarn.
I used Bernat Blanket

For the eye and for the mouth: Worsted yarn.
I used « I love this cotton» from Hobby Lobby.





Pattern: How to crochet a rainbow monster?

 


I am showing the pattern for this yellow monster (with 1 or 2 eyes). Feel free to modify the colors  in order to make the monster of your choice.


The eyes:

Monsters with 2 eyes: 

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

Make 2:

With the white yarn and the 3.5 mm hook.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [2 sc in all st]. (12)

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing).

Insert the 7.5 mm eye in the center of your magic ring, close the magic ring tightly and put the back of the safety eye. Repeat for the second eye.

Keep them for later.

 

Monsters with 1 eye: 

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

With the white worsted yarn and the 3.5 mm hook.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: [1 inc in all st]. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in the next st, 1 inc in the next st] x6. (18)

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing).

Insert the 9 mm eye in the center of your magic ring, close the magic ring tightly and put the back of the safety eye.

Keep them for later.





The ears:

Make 2:

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

With the white chunky yarn (or the color of your choice) and the 6 mm hook.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • sl st in the next st.

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing).

Keep them for later.

 


The arms:

Make 2:

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

With the white chunky yarn (or the color of your choice) and the 6 mm hook.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Rounds 2 to 6: [1 sc in all st]. (6)
  • sl st in the next st.

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail for sewing). Close the arm with your tapestry needle.

Keep them for later.





The Legs, body and head:

Leg 1: 

Work in rounds, do not turn unless specified. If needed, use a stitch marker for the first stitch of each round.

With the white yarn and the 6 mm hook (feel free to change to colors and choose the colors of your choice instead. The number of possibilities are endless.

  • Round 1: start 8 sc in a magic ring. (8)
  • Round 2: [1 sc in all st]. (8)

Change for the yellow yarn:

  • Rounds 3 to 5: [1 sc in all st]. (8)

Cut the yarn

 

Leg 2:

Make another leg just like you did for the first one but do not cut the yarn after round 5.

Joining the legs:

  • Round 6: Keep working after the last round of the leg 2 and ch 2;  Keep working in the first leg: make 1 sc in the next 8 st. Make 1 sc in each of the previous ch 2. Now working in the second leg again:  1 sc in the next 8 st. (20)

Fill the legs with poly-fil.

  • Rounds 7 to 16: [1 sc in all st]. (20)

Fill the body with poly-fil.

  • Round 17: [1 dec in all st]. (10)

Cut the yarn and close the body with your tapestry needle.

 

Assembling the monster:

You can now attach the arms to the body between the rounds 10 and 11.

Attach the eyes over the rounds 13 and 14.

Attach the ears on each sides of the head over the round 16.

With your tapestry needle and the black yarn (yarn calling for 5,5 mm (I) hook), make a mouth between the rounds 11 and 12.

    1. Hi Sharon, I haven’t made them with different yarn as I needed to make 14 of them if a few days. If you use double strands of red heart super saver, you should be able to make one of a similar size. If you use just one strand, it should work too but it will be much smaller.
