Crochet Pattern Chick Appliqué
Start Here:
Please read the whole pattern properly before starting.
The pattern is written using US terms.
This appliqué is made of the following parts:
- Body
- Head
- 2 wings
- 2 feet
Size:
- 3.5 inches (8 cm)
Material:
- Yarn calling for a 5.5 mm hook in yellow and orange
- Size 2.75 mm crochet hook (B/2). You can use a larger crochet, I used to do all my crochet appliques with a 3.5 mm crochet. It will work fine but your applique will be slightly bigger.
- 2 black safety eyes (7.5 mm)
- Stitch markers (if needed)
- Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
- chain (ch)
- magic ring (mr)
- single crochet (sc)
- increase (inc)
- invisible decrease (dec)
- slip stitch (sl st)
- half double crochet (hdc)
- double crochet (dc)

The head – Crochet Pattern Chick Appliqué.
- The head is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yellow yarn.
- Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
- Round 2: inc 6 times. (12)
- Round 3: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (18)
- Round 4: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st, 1 sc in next st ] x6. (24)
- Round 5: [1 inc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 st] x6. (30)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Put the eyes between rounds 2 and 3, spaced by 4 st.
The beak – Crochet Pattern Chick Appliqué
With a 2.75 mm crochet and orange yarn.
- Row 1: ch 4. (4)
- Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. (3)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the head).
Sew the beak (row 2 should be at the top) below the eyes.
The body – Crochet Pattern Chick Appliqué.
- The body is worked in rows.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yellow yarn.
- Row 1: ch 7. (7)
- Row 2: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 6 ch. (6)
- Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 inc. (8)
- Rows 4 to 10: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (8)
- Row 11: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 dec. (6)
- Rows 12 to 13: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (6)
- Row 14: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next 2 st. (5)
- Row 15: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (5)
- do not turn, make 1 sc evenly all around (you do not want to crochet to tight for this part – you can also use a bigger size crochet). (approx. 32 st)
Cut the yarn and fasten off.
Sew the head at the top of the body. You can choose the position of the head depending if you want a taller or smaller chick. See the picture below where I decided to place the head.
The wings – Crochet Pattern Chick Appliqué.
I recently changed the way I made the wings. However, some of have a preference for the old way. This is why you will find 2 ways to make the wings below.
New version:
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yellow yarn.
Right-wing:
- Row 1: ch 2. (2)
- Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc. (1)
- Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 inc. (2)
- Row 4: ch1, turn; 1sc, 1 inc. (3)
- Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 2 st. (4)
- Row 6: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 3 st, 1 inc. (5)
- Row 7: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 5 st. (5)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Left-wing:
- Row 1: ch 2. (2)
- Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc. (1)
- Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 inc. (2)
- Row 4: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc. (3)
- Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc. (4)
- Row 6: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 3 st. (5)
- Row 7: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 5 st. (5)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Old version:
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yellow yarn.
Right wing:
- Row 1: ch 7. (7)
- Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc, 1 hdc in the next 2 ch, 1 dc in the next 3 ch. (6)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Left wing:
- Row 1: ch 8. (8)
- Row 2: starting in the 3rd ch from the hook: 1 dc in the next 3 ch, 1 hdc in the next 2 ch 1 sc. (6)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Sew the wings on each side of the body.
The feet – Crochet Pattern Chick Appliqué (make 2).
- The feet are worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and orange yarn.
- Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
- Round 2: ((1 sc, 1 dc, 1 sc) in the next st); 1 sl st; ((1 sc, 1 dc, 1 sc) in the next st). (7)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Sew the feet to the body. You have 2 options here: you can sew the feet over the body (which I did) or you can sew them behind the body and let only the “toes” show up.
