Pattern: How to crochet a Gingerbread man applique?

I have made a boy and a girl version. I used the exact same pattern. The only differences are the bow (around the neck for the boy / on the head for the girl), the eyelashes (for the girl only), and the color of the cheeks (red for the boy/pink for the girl).

The Body – Crochet pattern Gingerbread Man Appliqué

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the brown yarn

We start the body by the legs (made separately and then joined together and we keep working up to the head). The arms are attached later on once the body is done.

First leg:

  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 2 ch. (2)
  • Rows 2 to 7: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (2)

Cut the yarn and make the second leg as explained below.

Second leg:

  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 2 ch. (2)
  • Rows 2 to 7: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (2)
  • Row 8: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 2 st, ch 1, 1 sc in the 2 st from the first leg (make sure the first leg is on the right side: the yarn you cut should be toward the other leg – see picture below). (5)
  • Row 9: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 2 st, 2 sc in the next st (the ch you made in the previous row), 1 sc in the next 2 st. (6)
  • Rows 10 to 14: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (6)
  • Row 15: ch1, turn; 1 dec (place a stitch marker or a small piece of yarn), 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 dec (place a stitch marker or a small piece of yarn). (4)
  •  Row 16: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next st, 1 dec, 1 sc in the next st. (3)

  • Row 18: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (6)
  • Row 19: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 1 inc. (8)
  • Rows 20 to 21: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (8)

  • Row 25: ch1, turn; 2 dec. (2)

Cut the yarn, and leave a long tail.

The Arms (make 2) – Crochet pattern Gingerbread Man Appliqué

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the brown yarn

Let’s start by the right arm (at the left when the gingerbread man is facing you).

  • Row 1: Insert your hook on Row 15 where you place the first stitch marker. Join with the brown yarn and make 1 sc in the same st. Make 1 sc in the following st. (2)
  • Rows 2 to 6 : ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 2 st. (2)

Cut the yarn.

Let’s now make the left arm (at the right when the gingerbread man is facing you).

  • Row 1: Insert your hook on Row 14 (the row below the second stitch marker). Join with the brown yarn and make 1 sc in the same st. Make 1 sc in the following st. (2)
  • Rows 2 to 6 : ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 2 st. (2)

Cut the yarn.

The Border – Crochet pattern Gingerbread Man Appliqué

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the white yarn

Join with the white yarn on the side of the head (see pictures below), and make 1 sc evenly all around (you do not want to crochet to tight for this part – you can also use a bigger size crochet). Follow the instructions below:

  • at the end of the first arm, make 2 sc in the 2 st at the top of the arm.

  • miss 2 st below the first arm (at the corner with the body)

  • at the end of the first leg, make 2 sc in the 2 st at the top of the leg.

  • at the end of the second leg, make 2 sc in the 2 st at the top of the leg.
  • miss 2 st below the second arm (at the corner with the body)

  • at the end of the second arm, make 2 sc in the 2 st at the top of the arm.
  • sl st in the first white st
  • cut the yarn

Join now with the brown yarn, make 1 sc evenly all around (you do not want to crochet to tight for this part – you can also use a bigger size crochet). Follow the instructions below:

  • at the end of the first arm, make 2 sc in the 2 st at the top of the arm.
  • at the end of the first leg, make 2 sc in the 2 st at the top of the leg.
  • miss 1 st between both legs

  • at the end of the second leg, make 2 sc in the 2 st at the top of the leg.
  • at the end of the second arm, make 2 sc in the 2 st at the top of the arm.
  • sl st in the first brown st
  • cut the yarn

The Face – Crochet pattern Gingerbread Man Appliqué

Place the eyes between Rows 21 and 22, spaced by 2 st. (if you want to make eyelashes for the girl, do not fix them yet and make them with your tapestry needle and the black thread as shown in the picture below).

With your tapestry needle and the black thread, make the mouth over rows 19 and 20.

Take a small amount of red or pink yarn to make the cheeks.

The Buttons

If you want to use safety eyes (6 mm) as buttons, place three of them on the body.

You can also make buttons using yarn as follow: with a 3 mm hook, start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5). Make 1 sl st in the next st, cut the yarn and leave a long tail for sewing.

The Bow

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the red yarn

  • ch 6. (6)
  • Row 1: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 5 ch. (5)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn;1 sc in the next 5 ch. (5)

You now have to wrap the yarn a few times in the center of the bow (see picture below). Make sure the yarn is secured and sew the bow to the neck of the gingerbread man (or over the head if you are making the girl).

  1. Super cute and quick to work up. However, I’m having a very hard time with mine staying flat? Any tips to help this?

    1. Thank you. If you sew them on something, it should stay flat. Or if you want to use it as an ornament, I would suggest to make another one (without eyes,…) for the back and sew both pieces together.

  2. This pattern looks so cute I am going to give it a try I have to buy some yarn for the body of the gingerbread man.
