Make a Christmas hat for your Elf on the shelf:

Elf on the shelf: Crochet Sweater

Material:

  • Yarn calling for 5,5 mm hook in: red, green, light brown, dark brown, and red
  • Size 5 mm crochet hook for the jumper
  • Size 3.5 mm crochet hook for the applique
  • 2 black safety eyes (6 mm)
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

Pattern: How to crochet a sweater for an Elf on the shelf?


The jumper – Elf on the shelf: Crochet Sweater

We will make the front and the back of the jumper first.

Front side

With a 5 mm crochet and the green yarn.

  • Row 1: ch 15. (15)
  • Row 2: turn, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 14 ch.  (14)
  • Row 3: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 14 st. (14)

Change for the red yarn

  • Rows 4 to 9: ch1, turn: 1 hdc in the next 14 st. (14)
  • Row 10: ch1, turn: 1 hdc dec, 1 hdc in the next 10 st, 1 hdc dec. (12)
  • Row 11: ch1, turn: 1 hdc dec, 1 hdc in the next 8 st, 1 hdc dec. (10)
  • Row 12: ch1, turn: 1 hdc dec, 1 hdc in the next 6 st, 1 hdc dec. (8)
  • Row 13: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 2 st. (2)
  • Rows 14 to 17: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 2 st. (2)

Join with the red yarn on the last st of row 12, on the other side and work as follow:

  • Row 1: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 2 st. (2)
  • Row 2 to 5: ch1, turn: 1 sc in the next 2 st. (2)

Cut the yarn and keep it for later.

Make the back exactly like the front side.

Assembling:

Join both sides by sewing the shoulders first as in the picture below.

Then, starting from the bottom of the jumper, join the sides of the jumper by sewing from rows 1 to 10.

The neck

With a 5 mm crochet and the green yarn.

Round 1: Join with the green yarn at the top of the jumper (it does not matter where) and make 30 sc all around evenly

Rounds 2 to 4: 1 sc in all the 30 st. (30)

Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

The arms (make 2)

With a 5 mm crochet and the red yarn.

Round 1: Join with the red yarn in the arm position (it does not matter where) and make 16 sc all around evenly

Rounds 2 to 5: 1 hdc in all the 16 st. (16)

Change for the green yarn:

Rounds 6 to 7: 1 sc in all the 16 st. (16)

Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

NB: you can make more rounds of red hdc if you want the arms longer.

 

The reindeer applique

The head:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the light brown yarn.

  • Row 1: ch 5. (5)
  • Row 2: turn, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 3 ch, 3 sc in the last ch. Now working on the other side of the ch: 1 sc in the next 3 ch. (9)
  • Row 3: make 1 sl st in the first st of row 2. Starting in the same st where you made the sl st: 1 sc, 1 inc in the next st, 1 hdc in the next st, 3 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in the next st, 3 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in the next st, 1 inc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st. (15)
  • Row 4: make 1 sl st in the first st of row 3. Starting in the same st where you made the sl st: 1 sc, 1 inc in the next st, 1 sc, 1 inc, 1 sc, 2 hdc, 1 hdc, 2 hdc, 1 hdc, 2 hdc, 1 sc, 1 inc, 1 sc, 1 inc, 1 sc. (22)

Leave a long tail for sewing to the jumper and cut.

 

The nose:

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the red yarn.

Make 5 sc in a magic circle.

Cut the yarn, close the circle and sew it to the head. Add the 6 mm safety eyes.

 

The antlers (make 2):

With a 3.5 mm crochet and the dark brown yarn.

  • Row 1: ch 7. (7)
  • Row 2: turn, starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 4 ch; ch 3; starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 2 ch. Now working in the first ch you made: 1 sc in the left 2 ch.

Leave a long tail for sewing.

 

Sewing to the jumper

Sew the head and the antlers to the jumper.
