Crochet Ladybugs for a Festive 4th of July

Start Here:

Please read the whole pattern properly before starting.

The pattern is written using US terms.

This appliqué is made of the following parts:

  • Body and head
  • A pair of antennae

Size:

  • 2 inches (5 cm)

Material:

  • Yarn calling for a 5.5 mm hook in red or blue and black
  • Size 2.75 mm crochet hook (B/2). You can use a larger crochet, I used to do all my crochet appliques with a 3.5 mm crochet. It will work fine but your applique will be slightly bigger.
  • 2 googly eyes
  • 1 white star (I used a star button)
  • glue
  • Stitch markers (if needed)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Facultative: Poly-fill

Abbreviations:

  • chain (ch)
  • magic ring (mr)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • increase (inc)
  • invisible decrease (dec)
  • slip stitch (sl st)
  • half double crochet (hdc)
  • double crochet (dc)

Pattern: How to crochet Ladybugs for a Festive 4th of July?


The body and the head – Crochet Ladybugs for a Festive 4th of July

  • The body and head are worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and red or blue yarn.

  • Round 1: start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6)
  • Round 2: inc 6 times. (12)
  • Round 3: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (18)
  • Rounds 4 to 8: 1 sc in al st. (18)

Change for the black yarn.

  • Round 9: working in the back loop only: 1 sc in all st. (18)
  • Rounds 10 to 12: 1 sc in al st. (18)
  • Round 13: [1 sc in next st, 1 dec in next st] x6. (12)
  • Round 14: dec 6 times. (6)

Facultative: Slightly fill the body with poly-fill. You don’t want to put too much as you want your ladybug to keep a flat shape.

With your tapestry needle, close the head.


The antennae (make 2) – Crochet Ladybugs for a Festive 4th of July

  • The antennae are worked in rows.

With a 2.75 mm crochet and black yarn.

Antennae 1: Join with the black yarn in the front loop of Round 8 (it does not matter where)

  • Row 1: ch 6. (6)
  • Row 2: starting from the 3rd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 4 ch. (4)

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

Antennae 2: For the second antennae, join with the black yarn in the front loop of Round 8, separated by 4 st from the 1st antennae.

  • Row 1: ch 6. (6)
  • Row 2: starting from the 3rd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 4 ch. (4)

Cut the yarn and fasten off.

Glue 2 googly eyes on the head and a white star on the body.
