I decided to make a new crochet pattern for a chick in a smaller size. This little chick applique can more easily be used with the hen crochet applique and the rooster crochet applique.

Crochet Little Chick Appliqué
Start Here:
Please read the whole pattern properly before starting.
The pattern is written using US terms.
This appliqué is made of the following parts:
- Body
- Head
- 2 wings
- 2 feet
Size:
- 2.5 inches (6 cm)
Material:
- Yarn calling for a 5.5 mm hook in yellow and orange
- Size 2.75 mm crochet hook (B/2). You can use a larger crochet, I used to do all my crochet appliques with a 3.5 mm crochet. It will work fine but your applique will be slightly bigger.
- 2 black safety eyes (7.5 mm)
- Stitch markers (if needed)
- Tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
- chain (ch)
- magic ring (mr)
- single crochet (sc)
- increase (inc)
- invisible decrease (dec)
- slip stitch (sl st)
- half double crochet (hdc)
- double crochet (dc)

The head – Crochet little chick Appliqué.
- The head is worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yellow yarn.
- Round 1: start 4 sc in a magic ring. (4)
- Round 2: inc 4 times. (8)
- Round 3: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x4. (12)
- Round 4: [1 sc in next st, 1 inc in next st] x6. (18)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Put the eyes between rounds 2 and 3, spaced by 3 st.
With the orange yarn and your tapestry needle, make a little beak.
The body – Crochet Little chick Appliqué.
- The body is worked in rows.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yellow yarn.
- Row 1: ch 4. (4)
- Row 2: starting from the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc in the next 3 ch. (3)
- Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next st, 1 inc. (5)
- Rows 4 to 8: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (5)
- Row 9: ch1, turn; 1 dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 dec. (3)
- Rows 10: ch1, turn; 1 sc in all st. (3)
- do not turn, make 1 sc evenly all around (you do not want to crochet to tight for this part – you can also use a bigger size crochet). (approx. 18 st)
Cut the yarn and fasten off.
Sew the head at the top of the body.
The wings – Crochet Little Chick Appliqué.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yellow yarn.
Right-wing:
- Row 1: ch 2. (2)
- Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc. (1)
- Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 inc. (2)
- Row 4: ch1, turn; 1sc, 1 inc. (3)
- Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc in the next 2 st. (4)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Left-wing:
- Row 1: ch 2. (2)
- Row 2: starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: 1 sc. (1)
- Row 3: ch1, turn; 1 inc. (2)
- Row 4: ch1, turn; 1 inc, 1 sc. (3)
- Row 5: ch1, turn; 1 sc in the next 2 st, 1 inc. (4)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Sew the wings on each side of the body.
The feet – Crochet Little Chick Appliqué (make 2).
- The feet are worked in continuous rounds (as a spiral). Use a stitch marker if needed.
With a 2.75 mm crochet and yellow yarn.
- Round 1: start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5)
- Round 2: (2 sc in the next st); 1 sl st; (2 sc in the next st). (5)
Cut the yarn (but leave a long tail for sewing to the body).
Sew the feet over the body.
