Free Mini Koala Crochet Pattern

Looking for a quick and easy crochet koala pattern? This mini koala amigurumi is the perfect beginner-friendly project — small, cute, and fast to make!

I actually made 25 of these little koalas using fluffy plush yarn for my daughter’s birthday party, and they were a huge hit. My son even created a sweet ‘Adopt a Koala’ sign, and we displayed them all together in a box so each child could pick their favorite to take home. It turned out to be such a fun and memorable idea, and the kids absolutely loved them.

Whether you want to make a tiny 2-inch keychain (using light worsted yarn) or a fluffy 4.5-inch party favor (using plush yarn like I did), this pattern adapts perfectly! It’s designed to be simple and quick, making it ideal for party favors, small gifts, or adding to your collection of mini crochet animals.

Show me your work: Snap a photo of your finished koala and tag me @NatalinaCraft on Instagram or use the hashtag #NatalinaCraft. I feature my favorite makes in my stories every week!

Have a question? Did your ears turn out perfectly symmetrical? Let me know in the comments below!

Designer Notes & Tips for Success:

  • Work in Spirals: This pattern is worked in continuous rounds — do not join or turn unless stated. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your first stitch in every round!
  • Plush Yarn Warning: ⚠️ If using plush yarn, it can be hard to see your stitches. I highly recommend using the Chain 2 method instead of a magic ring.
  • Embrace Imperfection: When assembling your koala, don’t worry about making everything perfectly symmetrical. Your koala might look a little different from mine — and that’s completely okay! Small variations (like placing the nose slightly higher or lower) give your koala its own unique personality.
  • The Party Test: I made 25 of these koalas for my daughter’s birthday, and no two were exactly the same — and that’s what made them so special! So take your time, have fun with it, and don’t stress about perfection. 😊
